Privacy policy

How Download Manager Plus handles your data: your download history stays on your device, anonymous usage analytics help us improve it and every permission has a reason.

Last updated:

Summary

  • Your download history and everything you organize are stored in your browser, on your device.
  • We have no servers that receive your downloads, your files or your browsing history.
  • You don't need an account, we don't sell your data and we don't show ads.
  • Anonymous usage analytics are always on and never include your files, your downloads or the pages you visit.

Data stored on your device

Download Manager Plus stores this data in the extension's storage (IndexedDB and the browser's extension storage), on your device:

  • Download history: file name and path, download address and source page address, site, size, type, dates and status.
  • What you add: tags, notes, collections, favorites, folders, automation rules, file name templates and saved views.
  • Your preferences and the temporary state of downloads in progress (progress, speed and queue).
  • If you turn on media detection: the addresses of the videos, audio and PDFs found in each tab, only while the browser is open. They're deleted when you close it or turn off detection.

This data isn't sent to our servers and we can't see it. It only leaves your browser if you export it or, with the website API, when a site checks the status of a download it requested itself. Downloads from incognito windows are never saved to the history.

What we don't collect

  • The content of the files you download.
  • Your browsing history, the content of the pages you visit, your cookies or your passwords.
  • Your name, your email or any data that identifies you.

The extension only connects to the servers you download files from and to the analytics service described below.

Usage analytics

Analytics help us learn which features are used so we can improve them. They're always on while the extension is installed. The data is anonymous and tied only to a random ID. We use Moderok, an analytics service for browser extensions, which receives this data:

Data sent by the usage analytics
DataWhen it's sent
A random installation ID, generated in your browser and unrelated to your identityWith every event
Browser and its version, operating system, language, extension version and the part of the extension that sends the event (popup, manager, background…)With every event
Name, address and title of the extension page you open (popup, manager, side panel or welcome guide), without any search or filter. Never the web pages you visitWhen you open an extension page
The event name and its properties, described in the events table. They never include text you typeWhen you use a feature that records an event
Lifecycle events: install, first open, daily activity and extension updatesAutomatically
An uninstall notice, which may open a short optional surveyWhen you uninstall

These are all the events the extension can send and what their properties contain:

Analytics events the extension can send
EventWhen it's sentProperties
__installYou install the extension.None
__first_openThe first time you open the extension after installing it.None
__daily_pingAt most once a day, to count active users.None
__updateThe extension updates to a new version.previousVersion (previous version number)
__page_viewYou open an extension page (popup, manager, side panel or welcome guide). Searches, filters and the web pages you visit are never recorded.url (address of the extension page, without searches or filters); title (title of the extension page); location (name of the extension page)
theme_changedYou change the theme of the extension's pages.theme (light, dark, system)

We never send file names, download addresses, pages you visit, text you type or data that identifies you. If you uninstall the extension, it stops sending events and the browser deletes the random ID.

Permissions and what they're used for

When you install it, the extension doesn't request access to any website: that access is only requested site by site if you use the website API. Each permission is used only for the following:

Extension permissions and what they're used for
PermissionWhat it's used for
downloadsRead the list of downloads, show their progress, pause, resume, cancel and retry them, and start the downloads you request.
downloads.uiHide the browser's download bubble, because the extension replaces it. You can show it again in Settings.
downloads.openOpen a finished file when you click it in the extension.
storageStore your preferences, rules and folders, and the temporary progress state of downloads.
unlimitedStoragePrevent the browser from deleting your local download history when it exceeds the default quota.
notificationsNotify you when a download finishes, fails or is repeated, with actions to open it, retry it or show the one you already had.
contextMenusAdd “Download” and “Save to folder” to the right-click menu of links, images, video and audio, and “Grab links from this page” to the page's menu.
alarmsRun scheduled downloads, quiet hours, retries, the history cleanup and the progress check.
activeTabRead the links in the current tab only when you ask the link grabber to find them.
scriptingRun the link grabber in the active tab and enable the website API only on the sites you authorize.
sidePanelShow the compact download list in the browser's side panel.
offscreenMerge the segments of a stream you choose to download into a single file, without loading the whole stream into memory.
declarativeNetRequestWithHostAccessSend the page's origin as the referrer when downloading a stream's segments, as its player would. Only on the extension's own requests and only while that download lasts.
Access to websites (optional)Requested for all sites when you let any website send you downloads (the welcome guide offers this) or turn on media detection, or site by site if you only authorize some websites. It's never granted when you install the extension.
webRequest (optional)Only with media detection turned on: see the type and size of what pages load to find videos, audio and PDFs. It doesn't block or modify any request.

Website API

Websites can send downloads to Download Manager Plus with a universal link from our site or, if you allow it for that site, with a JavaScript bridge.

  • Each request opens a confirmation window showing the site making it, the file name and the full address, unless you've marked that site as trusted.
  • A site only receives the status of the downloads it requested itself. It never sees your history or your other downloads.
  • You can view and revoke authorized and trusted sites in Settings. Revoking a site removes its permission and the bridge.
  • When you use a universal link, the link's page opens in your browser and passes the file's address to the extension. We don't store it in any database.

Sale of data and third parties

We don't sell or rent your data. The only third party that receives data from the extension is Moderok, only to provide that service to us. As with any internet connection, Moderok receives the IP address the events are sent from.

This website doesn't use advertising or analytics cookies. It stores the theme you choose in your browser. Like any website, the hosting provider may temporarily log technical data about visits, such as the IP address, for security.

How to delete your data

  • Delete individual downloads or your whole history from the manager, or set up automatic cleanup.
  • Analytics can't be turned off inside the extension; uninstalling it stops them.
  • Uninstall the extension: the browser deletes all its local data, including the analytics ID.

Because the analytics ID is random, we can't link it to you or find your events from your name or email.

Changes to this policy

If we change this policy, we'll update the date on this page. If a change affects the data being processed, we'll also mention it in the store listing and in the release notes.
